We are now waiting to resume the day of intensive debates (the participants have gone off for lunch) at 4pm with the last panel of the day. The two panels today were both focused on the theme “New Directions for Arab Feminist Thought” where we heard papers from Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, and Sudan.
We will be providing you with more detailed coverage of the papers presented later tonight. We were also informed that all of these papers will be published in a book by Bahithat to come out early in 2010. What is most evident to note, however, is that the debates are very much alive. Opinions ranged from those who believed that feminism should teach women how to be better wives and mothers (yes, believe it) to talks about adopting progressive politics on sexual minorities in our movements.
